Definition: Strep Throat is a bacterial infection caused by the Group A Streptococcus pyogenes.
Treatment: An antibiotic is needed to treat Strep Throat.
Symptoms: A “sudden, severe sore throat.” A fever. Swollen Glands in the neck area.
Who Gets Strep? Strep Throat is uncommon in very young children, but if they do get it, it can cause nasal congestion and a fever. Babies that have Strep Throat may act fussy and have loss of appetite.
Usually over age 5 years you do not have a cough or runny nose with Strep Throat but if your provider suspects you may have Strep Throat, he/she may want to do a Throat Culture. It is not recommended treatment to be started until the results from the Strep Culture come back.
What to do to help symptoms while waiting for Strep Culture results?
When can one with Strep Throat return to work, daycare or school?
When starting an antibiotic, you are probably no longer contagious after 24 hours. As long as you or your child do not have a fever and are feeling well, your medical provider may say you can return to school or work.
